What will happen in the Open edX ecosystem and community between this and the next 2025 conference in Paris?
A Comprehensive Overview
In Stellenbosch, it was beyond questioning that the Open edX platform is one of the best open-source learning management systems (LMS). The Open edX platform provides the technology to power edX.org and 2U and thousands of other learning platforms allowing institutions, universities, enterprises, and educators to create and deliver engaging online courses.
The first workshop day was highly attended, and we participated in an excellent session organized by The Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika on Design Thinking in Education. Many apps were developed collaboratively in groups, and the experience was fantastic for everyone involved. In the second workshop, we focused on bringing our ideas to life, making it a truly productive and inspiring day.
In a group of Open edX service providers, we presented “A Deep Dive Into the Open edX Platform’s Competitive Standing & Future Enhancements,” and we not only learned common South African expressions but also gained valuable insights.
Let’s briefly summarise the proceedings of this important workshop, which was divided into two parts. This structure allowed us to evaluate the Open edX product from several critical perspectives. We learned about current trends in EdTech & E-Learning and prepared a competitive analysis of other open source leading solutions, such as Canvas or Moodle.
We’ve established a significant global footprint for the Open edX LMS, affirming its recognition as a widely preferred solution, not limited to Europe or North America. This makes it a compelling choice for institutions and learners worldwide.
Using a SWOT analysis, we gathered valuable insights and initiated discussions about the Open edX roadmap that extended beyond the workshop and continued in many follow-up meetings. As a result, several agreements on the next steps, product vision, and needs were reached. This is exciting news, and more details follow below.
We had a in-depth look at the Open edX LMS highlighting its strengths and capabilities.

Together, these keynotes provided a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of education in Africa. They underscored the urgency of addressing educational disparities while showcasing the potential of collaborative efforts and technological advancements in creating a more equitable and effective education system across the continent.
My personal conclusion
No one is expected to know everything. It’s okay to ask for help and to keep learning. You can use the Open edX LMS or many other tools. Learning doesn’t depend on a system; it depends on us and how we support each other in reaching our goals together.
After the conference, three of us decided to find out how challenging it is to hike up Table Mountain. It wasn’t easy, but we did it. We supported each other along the way, and it was amazing!
Thank you John Swope and Adrian Le’Roy Devezin for joining me on the INDIA VENSTER TABLE MOUNTAIN HIKING TRAIL (The toughest way up Table Mountain!).
