We’re looking forward to the 2023 Open edX conference, happening from Tuesday, March 28th through Friday, March 31st. We’d love to share with you what we’re planning for each day of the conference. Today we’ll feature the schedule for Friday, the last day of the conference, which will feature a variety of participatory sessions – a Community Town Hall, Working Group meetings (open to all!), and plenty of Birds of a Feather sessions. These sessions will not be recorded. Read on for more!
Community Town Hall
Friday morning we’ll be featuring a Community Town Hall, a chance for the whole community to participate in meaningful conversations and interact with one another on topics that pertain to all of us. This town hall will likely include short talks and topic-driven discussion on matters such as the Open edX project’s product direction, Open edX governance, or community state and status. The exact content of the Town Hall is still being worked on, but it will definitely cover topics that would benefit from everyone’s input and participation.
Working Group Meetings
This year, Friday afternoon will feature interleaved working group meetings and Birds of a Feather sessions. We’ll make space for working groups to meet, but each group will be driving the agenda of their meeting. There will be multiple time slots, so people who participate in more than one working group may have a chance to attend each group.
One note: attending a Working Group meeting at the conference does not mean you are required to join the group! We encourage everyone at the conference to attend one of these meetings, learn about what the group does, and meet some of the people who take point on Open edX releases, product, frontend, translations, marketing, deprecation, or data.
Birds of a Feather
“Birds of a Feather” is a term commonly used at technical conferences to describe unstructured time where conference attendees propose topics they’d like to discuss and other attendees gather around those topics for meaningful conversation. For example, at the 2022 conference attendees proposed topics such as “Open edX Governance”, “Instructional Design”, and “Code Security” People who were interested in one of these topics gathered together at a table with like-minded attendees and had the chance to dive into a topic together. Many rousing conversations were had – and many “TO DO” items were generated! The hardest part about Birds of a Feather often is picking which of many interesting topics to talk about.
